What Remains of the Body takes readers into the heart of the language reform in Belle Époque Athens with the story of a young woman charting her own course, only to find meaning where she least expects it.
It is the nineteenth century and for Danae, who has been the product of an oppressively proper upbringing in Alexandria, Egypt, the ambition to set up a literary magazine by and for women in Greece offers her the chance to discover her potential to write her own life.
As the Bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 by the British Mediterranean Fleet transforms the city, Danae does the unthinkable: she falls in love with a young Greek psychiatrist, who is devoted to his science and wants to marry her. She leaves behind her childhood home and follows him to Greece, where the meltdown of the country's economy is igniting massive social unrest.
There, in the heart of Athens, her husband's best friend, an incorrigible bohemian, moves into their orbit. As the unlikely trio bands together, they bring together a glamorous circle of brilliant, vain artistic friends who will grow into legend.
But Danae has secrets, and her new life becomes complicated. Her dreams elude her as she struggles with a schizophrenic brother and a misguided marriage, never suspecting that someone is watching her.
